Tax refunds

Travelers with a permanent address outside the EU, who have purchased goods here in Denmark, can have the Tax refunded at Copenhagen Airport.

General terms:

  • You must have residence or habitual residence outside the EU, e.g., the United Kingdom, the USA, or China.
  • You must have purchased one or more items with a total value exceeding DKK 300 from the same store (for individuals residing in Norway: minimum DKK 1,200 per item).
  • You must take the items out of the EU within 3 months from the month of purchase. This means that you must have taken the items out of the EU no later than the end of November if you purchased the items in August.

The amount can only be paid out in Denmark if Denmark is the last EU destination before the home country/final destination.

If Denmark is the last EU destination before the home country/final destination

  • Purchases made at shops outside the airport:

If you have purchased goods in Denmark before arriving at Copenhagen Airport, you can get a refund of between 10% and 19% of the total price of the item, depending on the amount.

Procedure:

  • You must have a Tax Free document from the store where the goods were purchased. This document must include the following:
    1. Date of issue,
    2. Name and address of the store, as well as VAT registration number,
    3. Quantity, type, and value of the goods (selling price including VAT) as well as the amount of VAT, and
    4. Your name and address. You must be able to prove your residence or habitual residence outside the EU via a passport or equivalent identification.
  • The Tax Free document must be stamped at Terminal 3 of the airport (Danish, Swedish, Finnish, and Norwegian Global Blue documents are stamped by Global Blue. Danish and Norwegian Planet documents are stamped by Planet (which you can find at Forex)). Outside opening hours, Customs in Terminal 3 stamp all Tax Free documents. It is a condition that the goods can be presented.

  • The amount can then be paid out by Global Blue or Planet Tax Free.
  • Purchases made in the airport:

If you buy goods in the shops at Copenhagen Airport, you have the opportunity to get a refund of between 10-20% of the total price of the item.

In some shops, you can get the amount refunded directly in the store, and in others, you need to get the amount refunded via either Global Blue or Planet.

If you need to have the VAT refunded via Global Blue or Planet, you must do the following:

  1. You must have a Tax Free document in the store where the goods were purchased. This must include the following:
    • Date of issue,
    • Name and address of the store as well as VAT registration number,
    • Quantity, type, and value of the goods (selling price including VAT) as well as the VAT amount, and
    • Your name and address.
  2. The Tax Free document must be stamped at Terminal 3 in the airport (Danish, Swedish, Finnish, and Norwegian Global Blue documents are stamped by Global Blue. Danish and Norwegian Planet documents are stamped by Planet (which you can find in Forex)). Outside opening hours, the Customs Authority in Terminal 3 stamps all Tax Free documents. It is a condition that the goods can be presented.
  3. The amount can then be paid out in Global Blue or Planet Tax Free.

If Denmark is not the last EU destination before your home country/final destination

If you have a layover in another European airport before your final destination, you can still buy goods and get a VAT refund, but the money will be paid out in the EU destination airport where you have the layover, not in Copenhagen Airport.

This means you still need to have your Danish receipts checked and stamped by Danish customs. This can be done at either Global Blue or Planet (Global Exchange), which are available both before and after security checks.

For residents of Norway or The Åland Islands

If you are a resident of Norway or The Åland Islands, you can only get a refund of the VAT on goods if the sales price for each item exceeds DKK 1,200.

You must contact Norwegian customs to pay the import tax before refunding the Danish VAT. To get the Danish VAT refunded, the Norwegian VAT must be paid upon entry to Norway. Based on this, Global Blue advises against issuing Tax-Free forms for individuals residing in Norway.
