Copenhagen Airports are once again connected via direct cargo link to South America. The multi-stop route, running Copenhagen – Viracopos – Montevideo – Santiago de Chile, opened with LATAM Cargo in June 2019 and offers great opportunities to freight forwarders and shippers, particularly within the pharmaceutical, food ingredients and automotive parts sectors in Denmark and Sweden. The route reduces shipment transit time by up to 48 hours, and operates with a CEIV Pharma cargo certification.

Flights are initially scheduled with one weekly frequency, anticipated to rise to two weekly frequencies following demand in the upcoming few months. The route is served by a Boeing 767-300F, with approximately 25 tons per departure available.

Developing unserved cargo routes

“Our focus is on developing unserved routes around the world,” said Lars Gotfredsen, Air Cargo Manager at Copenhagen Airport, “And this new route fits neatly within that strategy. It offers a direct link between Scandinavia and a new continent, and is a much wanted route. It represents a great opportunity for the pharmaceutical and automobile industries in Sweden and Denmark, and is already delivering full loads.”

Sweden and Greater Copenhagen’s strong export market, including big commodity flows such as pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, machinery parts and raw materials, make it a particularly attractive location for intercontinental routes of this type. The entry of LATAM Cargo into the market from South America is what makes the route possible; prior to this, Copenhagen has not had a connection with the continent since 2006.

The preferred cargo hub of Northern Europe

The process in Copenhagen is set for stringent, efficient and smooth handling of all commodities and especially for pharmaceuticals, which require sensitive and on-time performance at every departure. WFS has been chosen for ground handling activities, and will soon be ready for CEIV Pharma certification, while DHL Aviation will be running all Ramp Handling activities.
